OK, I've enabled secure updates of the reverse lookup zone. This seems to be working, and when I do NSLookup the server now knows what it's name is. There are still a lot of things missing from the forward zone, (windows 98 and linux workstations) so I'm waiting until some DHCP leases expire to see if that helps.
